The Idrija hills are part of the very rugged, quite steep mid-elevation areas, which rise up to 1,000m on average. Valleys and narrow gorges with crystalline waters nestle among hills and ridges; in between, there are karst plateaus. More than three quarters of the land is covered with forests, home to many different plant and animal species. Mountain tops offer breathtaking views of Alpine peaks to the north and the azure Adriatic Sea to the south. There are many marked hiking trails suitable for walking year-round.
Idrija Geopark area offers 22 interconnecting thematic trails. In just one day, visitors can walk a variety of trails and tours and adapt them to their abilities and equipment. Hiking around Idrija Geopark is not just an active leisure experience around Idrija; with a variety of thematic trails highlighting the natural and cultural features of Idrija's distinctive rural areas, even the biggest sports fans will not want to miss out. 1. Day
Arrival and check-in.
Visit the old part of Idrija town and the Trail along the Rake, the four-centuries-old water channel. There is a 2,5 km long path, unveiling the region᾽s treasures of geology, flora and cultural history. The world of natural beauties of the Zgornja Idrijca Landscape Park starts here.
Visit the Kamšt - an old water pump with the oldest wooden water driven wheel, Wild lake and Scopoli᾽s memorial garden.
2. Day
The trail along the lookout peaks above Črni Vrh is part of the marked the Idrija and Cerkno hiking trail, which proceeds round Velika peč, Čelkov vrh and Javornik.
3. Day
A path leads from Idrija to Hleviše mountain hut (6 km). The hut is located by the upper edge of a large clearing a little below the peak of Hleviška planina alpine pasture, which is one of the peaks of the hilly area between the Idrijca and the Nikova.
