Visit Idrija, the capital of Idrija lace and spend the day among the lace and UNESCO’s cultural heritage

Idirja is well known for the second biggest mercury mine in the world, wonderful Idrija lace, and exquisite local cuisine.  We invite you to Idrija, where your day will be filled with exciting experiences. Learn about the rich cultural heritage, lifestyle of the local people, and local cuisine, visit museums and selling galleries - all revolving around Idrija lace.

While walking around the city centre, you will discover stories about this interesting town with a rich cultural heritage, and learn everything about famous people from Idrija who, centuries ago, put Idrija on the world’s map, with their genius ideas.

You will be fascinated by the mine castle Gewerkenegg that stands on the hill above the city centre, where our stories, especially the story about Idrija lace, will come to life.

Castle Gewerkeneggg is one of the few castles in Slovenia that never had a feudal function; it mostly served the needs of the mine. Nowadays, it houses the Idrija Municipal Museum, where you can see exhibits about the 500 year old history of the mine and the town, an expansive geological collection, and the newest exhibit Tracing Mercury: Idrija - Almaden.

You will find eight different thematic groups, when you walk through our permanent exhibition “Idrija Lace; A History Written in Thread”, which will help you learn more about the key characteristics and activities that define Idrija lace. One of the main attractions is the 6m² large table cloth, which used to belong to Tito’s wife Jovanka Broz.

Take a lunch break in one of the local restaurants or inns and treat yourself to tasty Idrija’s “žlikrofi” or buy souvenirs and items adorned with Idrija lace.

The lunch will be followed by a visit of Idrija Lace School, which has been active since 1876. You will be able to see the masterpieces made by dexterous hands of children, enjoy a guided tour of the exhibition, and a live presentation of lace-making, and buy handmade lace and lace-making equipment.

Then, you will walk to the Idrija Miner’s House and have a look. It was built in the second half of the 18th century. An astounding number of people lived in the house in the year 1910, 18 to be precise. The exterior gives off a mighty impression, as it is surrounded by gardens. The ground floor is furnished as a typical miner’s house in the first half of the 20th century would be.

Enjoy Rezi cake with sugary lace or visit a tasting of local culinary delights - tasting of “zelševka” and “ocvirkovica”, cheese from Idrijska Krnica, honey and other apiculture products, “geruš”.  “Geruš” is an old wormwood spirit that satisfied miners’ thirst, cheered them up, and made going underground a bit easier.

You might decide to visit a tourist mine, Anthony’s Main Road, where you will find more than 1200 metres of underground tunnels right beside the oldest preserved mining entrance from the year 1500, or one of the other interesting tourist attractions: renovated Hg Smelter Plant, Military Museum, Scopoli’s Memorial Botanical Garden, or the Church of the Holy Trinity, which stands on the place where a well-known barrel-maker supposedly discovered mercury. Also, you can take a walk on Nature Learning Path Rake all the way to the dam Pri Kobili and further down to Divje jezero.

Visit Idrija, discover its beauties, and see that it offers interesting experiences for families, individuals, and groups of different generations.

Come to Idrija during the 38th Idrija Lace Festival - from June 14 to June 16, 2019.

All who adore Idrija lace are invited to visit the 37th Idrija lace festival, an internationally renowned festival, dedicated to the traditional craft of lace-making. The festival helps us preserve the tradition of Idrija lace lace-making and encourages innovations in lace-making and lace usage. During the festival, the town breathes lace; there are children and adults lace-making on the streets and all window shops are decorated with lace. Local and foreign lace masterpieces are put on display in numerous exhibitions and all of the shops carrying lace are open... The festival starts with a grand opening on Friday; during the next two days, visitors are able to attend expert meetings, lectures, lace-making workshops, creative workshops, the awarding of certificates, and participate in choosing the best lace. The programme is complemented by an interesting offer of goods, from both traditional craftsmen and artists, and other fun events. On Sunday, a national lace-making competition for children and adults will take place. They compete in different categories; the end of the competition is followed by awarding certificates to the best lace-makers. The festival’s reputation is growing more and more internationally, because of the inclusion of foreign lace-making centres, experts, and visitors.
