Try the exquisite local cuisine and explore the natural and cultural heritage of the oldest mining town in Slovenia.

Go underground through Anthony’s Main Road and visit the recently renovated Hg Smelting Plant. You might be interested in the collections on display in the Idrija Municipal Museum, castle Gewerkenegg, Miner’s House, Francis’ shaft or maybe you would like to see the mighty “kamšt”, a wooden water wheel, the Botanical Memorial Garden or mining locomotives displayed on the stage above the “kamšt”.

Fill your empty bellies with delicious Idrija “žlikrofi” with “bakalca” or other sauces.  Before or after the meal, you can indulge in “geruš” - miner’s wormwood spirit and a piece of “zeljševka” or “ocvirkovca”. While drinking coffee, you can sweeten your day by eating the famous Rezi cake, which is decorated with a sugary Idrija lace. You can taste sweet honey goods, while visiting the Municipal Apiary.

Walk along the Rake water channel to the famous Divje jezero, stop by the brook, where the water is “glih prau” (just) cold enough to make “geruš”. That was a special ritual performed by the miners. While everybody contributed the ingredients, only the oldest miner was allowed to prepare “geruš”. He would tilt the glass bottle left and right and say: “First I tilt you, then you will tilt me.” Indeed, miners took Scopoli’s recommendation about the beneficial effects of this drink to heart.

If the miner’s drink Geruš enthrals you, you can buy it at the TIC Idrija shop and enjoy it with your friends without any distractions. You will have the opportunity to buy other souvenirs and candy in the shop.

Rich and unique natural and technical heritage and authentic tastes invite you to experience them and create unforgettable memories.

The trip can also additional include the visit of:

- Anthony’s Main Road - one of the oldest preserved mine entrances in Europe and the oldest part of the Idrija mine;

- Hg Smelting Plant - an interactive presentation about the history of Idrija’s smelting and the extraordinary significance of mercury;

- collections displayed in the Idrija Municipal Museum in castle Gewerkenegg, including the main exhibitions: “Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija” and “Idrija Lace, A History Written in Thread”;

- Francis’ Shaft, where you can admire machines and devices, which represent valuable examples of technical heritage of the mercury mine;

- “kamšt” - mining pump powered by a wooden water wheel with a diameter of 13.6 metres, which is famous for being the biggest preserved wooden water wheel in Europe;

- Botanical Memorial Garden - dedicated to Joannes Antonius Scopoli, a naturalist of great European importance;

- Divje jezero, a lake of Karst origin, is also the first Slovenian outdoors museum. It shows its true colours, after a few days of rain;
