Holy Trinity, the oldest church in Idrija, is situated on the spot where, according to tradition, a legendary ‘tub maker’ first noticed the native mercury in 1490.

The first wooden chapel was erected a decade later, as confirmed by a document issued in Udine, Italy, on August 22nd, 1500.

By the beginning of the 17th century, a Gothic stone presbytery, wooden nave, and even flat painted ceiling were added to the building. In the second part of the 16th century it was temporarily taken over by Protestants, who exerted major influence in Idrija at the time. During the 30-year war in the first half of 17th century, when work on the new baroque church of St. Barbara in the middle of the settlement-market town stopped, the Church of the Holy Trinity was renovated and embellished.

In the first half of the 19th century, some wanted to transform the church into a school or a mercury warehouse, and others suggested removing it altogether. Fortunately, the archbishop of Ljubljana himself, Anton Alojzij Wolf, our eminent fellow local by origin, interceded and achieved its preservation.

The half-a-millennium-old church of the Holy Trinity is nowadays exemplarily restored. The Idrija Parish had it refurbished in the years 1981-1984 following the designs of the architect France Kvaternik. The building was given back its authentic forms and its interior has gained much in its appeal, whereby both historical and modern stylistic elements have been reasonably emphasized.
The presbytery is embellished by stained glass windows designed by Lojze Čemažar, a painter who has united Biblical and Idrija-native topics in an evocative manner. Objects like metal ore, a miner’s point (drill), and a carbide (eternal) lamp are also very eloquent symbols.
