Klavže are special water barriers in the valleys of the rivers Idrijca, Belca and Kanomljica. They were constructed and built for the purpose of floating timber used in the mine.

Until the beginning of the 20th century there were no appropriate forest roads or proper vehicles to use for transporting timber. The most suitable way therefore was floating wood along rivers and creeks. The extremely advanced system of floating along the Idrijca and its affluents using the water barriers ‘klavže’ worked from the end of the 16th century till the great flood in 1926. That natural disaster destroyed ‘grablje’ (the rakes) - the wooden construction used to stop the timber in Idrija and in Spodnja Idrija.
In the 18th century the initially wooden ‘klavže’ were made anew using stone. The largest by capacity and dimensions are ‘klavže’ on the Idrijca, built in 1772 by the local polytechnician Jožef Mrak.

The most grandeur nevertheless goes to ‘klavže’ on the stream Kanomljica, built in 1813. Nowadays all of them, except for the construction on the stream Zala, are renovated and awaiting visitors.

Consider walking or riding your bike to reach these extraordinary construction masterpieces, it will be a great way to get some exercise, to enjoy the fresh air and the picturesque environment that will recharge your energy levels.
