Pit water constantly disturbed the mining, so pumping systems had to be constructed to enable pumping the pit water out.

For the pumps to work they had to be driven by water. In the 17th century the river Idrijca was dammed at Kobila (above the Divje jezero lake and the water channel named ‘rake’ was built. For 350 years the water from the 3.5 km long channel was used to run the water pumps and the elevators to ascend and descend cargo along the shafts.

Idrija 'kamšt' is famous for being the largest preserved wooden wheel of this type in all Europe. Take a walk along the ‘rake’ water channel, along the Path of Idrija’s natural scientists.
