In authentic mining environment – in the Francis’ Shaft entrance building there is a collection of 29 specimens of machines and devices representing the valuable memorials of technical heritage of Idrija Mercury Mine.
The building is one of the oldest preserved Idrija Mercury Mine facilities. Excavation works of the shaft named after the Emperor Franz II started in 1792, at the time of the most intense mercury production. The main attraction of the collection is the restored steam-powered Kley’s pump dating from 1893, which is probably the largest preserved steam engine in all of Europe.
