The Red route enters Slovenia at border crossing Pesek and starts across Kras (the Karst) past Lipica, Škocjanske jame caves, Nanos, Predjama, over Javornik into the Idrijsko hribovje hills past the Divje jezero (the Wild lake), through ancient Idrija to Ermanovec.

It continues through the Škofjeloško hribovje hills and comes close to the Julijske Alpe (the Julian Alps) and makes a stop at the WW2 military hospital Franja and Porezen. The route reaches the Alps in the Spodnje Bohinjske gore (Bohinj mountains), enters the Triglavska jezera valley across Komna and descends into Trenta across Dolič.

After making a stop at the info centre of the Triglavski narodni park national park it takes us for a visit of the botanical garden Alpinum Julijana and past the source of the Soča to Vršič. It crosses Sleme and through the valley Tamar introduces the ski jumping centre at Planica. The route leaves Slovenia at Korensko sedlo.

More than 5,000 km of marked footpaths, split into 341 one-day legs will take you on an unforgettable experience of the wonderful Alpine world through eight countries. The routes will take you through unique natural world, flora and fauna, through the cradle of mountaineering and Alpine climbing, as well as through the living space for more than 13 million inhabitants, all the way from the sea level to the mountain peaks surpassing 3,000 m.

Along the way you will be able to get to know the extraordinary natural and cultural heritage, experience the mountain world far from civilization, get acquainted or befriend the inhabitants of these, mostly remote, places. The marked routes along which the logo Via Alpina will accompany you will take you to places of rest and invigoration after pleasant hiking.

The routes take you along easy paths with no difficult sections whatsoever and are accessible to all hikers – from the youngest to the oldest, individuals and families. Those of you who seek something more demanding, however, will be invited to take on the more difficult climbs along the way.

The 14 legs of the Red route (rdeča pot) through Slovenia will take you over all three Slovenian mountain massifs: Julijske Alpe (The Julian Alps), Karavanke (the Karavanke), and Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe (The Kamniško-Savinjske Alps), as well as beautiful hilly world of Kras (the Karst) with Lipica, Škocjanske jame caves, Predjama, WW2 hospital Franja, the Bohinjsko jezero lake, and the Triglavski narodni park national park, info centre of the TNP in Trenta, the emerald river Soča, the botanical garden Alpinum Julijana, the ski jumping centre at Planica, the mountaineering museum at Mojstrana, Golica – full of daffodils in the month of May, …
