Send postcard - Nature learning path Rake »Po poti idrijskih naravoslovcev« (Along the path of the Idrija scientists)X

Rake-foto Samo Trebižan.jpg

The path along the Rake channel is the only path offering a relaxing walk on mostly level ground. Only at the beginning the foot climbs a bit, but after that there are about two and a half kilometres of level ground. It takes you on the left bank of the Idrijca river, past hanging bridges, which offer an excellent view over the mountain torrent beauty of the Idrijca, to the Divje jezero lake (The Wild lake). The path is interesting in all seasons and weather conditions.

Before entering the Rake path the Museum society Idrija has arranged Scopoli memorial garden. It presents the image of landscape in bloom. At this very spot the pioneers of exploration of the then unknown nature started their journeys and started developing European natural sciences. Under the once deepest Joseph's shaft, four train engines are put on display. They served as a means to transport ore across the town to the smelting plant. The Rake channel has been built because of the mine and for about 350 years it supplied water to the giant water wheels, called kamšt, that have been used for pumping pit water and raising ore from the shafts. The largest preserved water wheel, 13.6 m in diameter, can be seen in the building under the Joseph’s shaft.

We continue our way along the Rake channel, where we can see the diverse geological structure, forest types and botanical features.

The nature learning path takes you through diverse forest types with rich undergrowth, past the largest ash tree, the English oak tree line, a spring with clean fresh water you can drink, all the way to the dam and the cave above Kobila. A path across a hanging bridge takes you to the Divje jezero lake (The Wild lake). These hanging bridges were once more than just a way of crossing the torrential river, they are placed especially high in order not to obstruct the massive amounts of logs floating down the wild water upon the opening of klavže – the water barriers on the Idrijca or the Belca rivers.

The Divje jezero lake (The Wild lake) lies hidden underneath the steep precipice of the Črni Vrh plateau. It is a typical Karst spring with the submerged system of not yet entirely researched cave tunnels. When the water levels are high, the lake does indeed become 'wild' and the water which springs out of it creates an approximately 60 cm high 'mushroom hat' on the surface of the lake. The outflowing water creates a mighty, but the shortest Slovenian river Jezernica.

Length: 2,5 km
