Send postcard - The Ledine plateau, spread between the Primorska and the GorenjskaX

Ledine-foto Božo Uršič.JPG

A steep but picturesque road which connects the Idrija and Poljane valley takes you from Spodnja Idrija to the Ledine plateau. The widespread plateau offers many possibilities of pleasant walks and beautiful views, the not too steep routes are also suitable for cycling and horse riding.
The starting point for the round tour is the Ledinsko Razpotje. This pass is a well known divide between the Adriatic and the Black Sea, and on the local level, between the Idrijca and the Žirovnica, the affluent of the Poljanska Sora.

Here barely notable karstic world begins here with marly limestone with typical dry valleys, holes and numerous occasional sinkholes. Among the meadows and fields the road takes you to Ledine. Just before the village, on the left side of the road, opens a cave, which is, unfortunately, hard to access. The Ledinska jama cave is a several hundred metres long water cave, with columns of stalagmites and stalactites in the last part. Ledine is an old village and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful villages in the Idrija region. The first written record of Ledine dates back to as early as 1063. However, the historical tradition of these places goes even much further back into history.

Above Ledine rise two hills definitely worth a visit. Westward of the village you can climb up Gradišče (998 m), which had been settled in prehistory and the antiquity, supposedly there had been an Old Slavic shrine. The hilltop is now overgrown and time has covered all traces of the past. On the other side lies Trepalova Sivka (969 m).

The marked path on the northern side of Gradišče goes down to the hamlet Pečnik. From here the steep path takes you down to the powerful karstic springs in the Peklenska grapa ravine. Around the springs numerous mills and accompanying buildings had grown – »Pečniški malni« (The Pečnik Mills). Today, the once monumental buildings are abandoned and in ruins. A nice footpath takes you past the mills down to Spodnja Idrija. Just a short way ahead, at the homestead at Žorgovše, opens a beautiful view on Spodnja Idrija. On the way down to the valley stands a chapel dedicated to St. Mary, where pilgrims from Ledine once made a stop on their way to Marija na Skalci – the church in Spodnja Idrija. Through Pečnik return to the starting point of the route.
