At the side of the Trg sv. Ahacija Square there is a mighty building, known as Šelštev with the entrance into Anthony’s Shaft,  the tourist mine.

In front of Anthony’s Shaft the magnificent building was constructed in the 18th century. It was used as a register office. On the upper floors there were provisional doctor’s offices, studies and mine employees’ apartments. On February 11, 1890 the famous engineer Stanko Bloudek was born in Šelštev, too.

By refurnishing the building and Anthony’s Shaft the oldest part of the mine was open to visitors on June 22, 1994. It offers its visitors a genuine experience of the mining environment. Anthony’s Shaft dates back to the year 1500 and is known as one of the oldest still preserved entrances into a mine in Europe. It is also the oldest part of Idrija Mercury Mine.
