The learning trail Kraški gozd (karstic forest) is a flatland route offering and easy walk where you get to enjoy some clean fresh air and relax in the pristine forest at the edge of the Trnovski gozd forest. The 2.5 kilometres long trail offers some interesting features of the karstic landscape, typical karstic rock with fossils as well as getting to know the characteristics of the forest eco system. An easy stroll along the circular trail will take about an hour. The route is also suitable for school groups.

The starting point is at the crossroads between Sp. Lome – Zg. Lome, which we reach via the main road Godovič – Črni Vrh by following the directions for Lome. The starting point is at the same time the first learning point which teaches the visitors the code of behaviour in the forest. Head toward the road for Sp. Lome and follow the direction posts equipped with the QR code, enabling you to access the extra materials published on the webpage. Just a few hundred metres ahead on the left opens a meadow with typical Karst features – škraplje (limestone pavements – clints). If you walk a few hundred metres along the road ahead pay attention to the fossil remains in rudist limestone.

Continue along and at the first crossroads turn left into the forest. The next stopping point presents the plant world. Once you've had your fill of the forest peace and had a look around continue along the road from which another post directs you into the forest to the Hrvatova jama cave, about 300 m away from the road. Return to the road and continue to the next point talking about forest management. A few steps ahead along the road and you come out of the forest, amidst houses and people. Walk to the main road, turn left and after about 20 metres, turn to a field road which takes you back to the starting point of your walk.

This trail can also be taken by bike and is a great starting point which can be stretched further along the Pot po visokem krasu (The high karst trail) and then connected to Matuckarjeva pot trail in Zadlog.

The main topic of Učna pot kraški gozd (Learning route karstic forest) is to get acquainted with the forest eco system and the forest's functions which are extremely important to man, but are often overlooked in today's rapid pace of life. Forests contain humidity, decrease the temperature changes, have a production role, regulate the hydro-system, purify the air, guard against ground erosion and winds, are a source of energy and play a psycho-aesthetic role. You will be able to experience some of these in person during your trip. You will also learn much about karst, karstic features, rocks and fossils and forest fauna. We conclude with the topic of forest management.

Life in the forest is extremely diverse. You might experience a small part of it if you behave as welcome visitors of the forest, listening to the stories told by the centuries old trees, rocks and fossils, rest your eyes on the calming colours of nature… Open your heart and your eyes will see and ears hear.
